Bio:
Lisa Van Alstine is a graduate of Lake Mary High School where she was on the honor roll and served as Vice President of the nearly 3,000 member student body. She participated in five different sports in high school, was a lacrosse team captain, and received the award for best attack. She first lettered in weightlifting as a sophomore on the varsity team and experienced competition at the state level. Fitness and health have always been important to Lisa and she is very disciplined about good nutrition. Throughout her school years she has also enjoyed debate, dance, modeling, gymnastics, swimming, surfing, volleyball, basketball, and cheerleading, as well as voice and theatre training. Lisa has also studied classical piano from age six.
She recently graduated from Rollins College with a B.A. in Music and received an Exemplary Service Award in recognition of outstanding community service during her tenure at Rollins. She is a recipient of a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship, a Southeastern Academic Scholarship, and the Rollins College McCullough and L.C. Smith music scholarships. In addition to the Music and Academic scholarships she’s earned, Lisa has been awarded over $14,000.00 in scholarships through the Miss America Organization. (She is very appreciative of the hardworking, generous volunteers that comprise the organization at the local and state levels and that her Bachelor’s degree is debt free.) After performing an original composition in concert, Lisa was the only female composer chosen to be featured in a Rollins College quarterly. She has presently begun her graduate level studies at the University of Central Florida and hopes to expand her original compositions.
For the past five years Lisa has been a lobbyist for the National Childhood Cancer Foundation in Washington D.C. and has rallied on the capitol steps. She currently holds the position of Florida State Team Leader for the N.C.C.F. and has successfully lobbied for 7.25 million dollars. As a survivor, Lisa has the privilege of bringing hope to children facing cancer. She personally understands their battle having been there herself. She has been a speaker at numerous Relay for Life events, a National Cancer Society luncheon where $40,000 dollars were raised, and volunteers locally with B.A.S.E. Camp of Orlando, a childhood cancer support organization. Being very active in her community, Lisa is the Spokesperson for both B.A.S.E. Camp of Orlando and The Children’s Miracle Network of Central Florida. (Currently, of all contestants within the state of Florida, she is the number one ranked fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network through the “Miss America for Kids” charity website since the inception of the program.)
Cancer is the number one child killing disease in America and Lisa urges everyone to join her in asking their congressmen to support the “Conquer Childhood Cancer Act.” This important legislation will provide 150 million dollars for research to reach the day when every child can be guaranteed a cure!
